Facebook wants to know where you are. Or rather, Facebook knows your friends want to know where you are, and they’re giving you a way to do that. The company made a big deal yesterday of their newly-announced service Facebook Places , which is basically a geotagging service for Facebook’s mobile website that allows you to ping your Facebook status with updates like, “I’m at McDonalds!” or “I’m on a boat!” Just another way for Facebook to track you and make money off your habits.
Interestingly enough, Facebook is way behind the curve on this one. Yelp, FourSquare, GoWalla, Booyah, and other services have used geotagging for years. Facebook, due to its size and penetration, will undoubtedly come to dominate these services in the weeks to come; however, interestingly, they’re working alongside those four competitors. Rather than compete with them, Facebook Places will cooperate with them. The four services assisted in Places development, and in turn they’ll sync their services into Place to allow you to retain your Mayor Of Starbucks status while simultaneously complaining about the company language of Starbucks!
Sweet deal, right? It’s interesting, for once, to see Facebook playing nice, rather than going into war mode. Maybe Mark Zuckerberg and company aren’t so bad after all!
