Gwilym Hughes was a movie buff. That’s probably the first thing about the man that comes to mind when his name is mentioned, if only because he holds the Guinness World Record for being the man who has watched the most movies. Since he saw his first movie, King Solomon’s Mines, in 1953, the man had watched an incredible 28,000 movies until he passed away on Monday at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Interestingly enough, Hughes’ love of films both started with and ended in a hospital stay. When he was a child, he spent several years in the hospital due to an illness, strapped to a metal frame. That’s where he saw his first movie, and he was immediately hooked. “You can imagine what it was like. I could only waddle my feet and move my hands and head. I was in an iron frame, and you saw these moving things in front of you. You just couldn’t wait for the next time. They were so wonderful. It just clicked my imagination.”
Hughes, a retired painter and decorator, kept detailed records of the movies he saw, including cast lists and newspaper clippings to verify his attendance. On an average week, he could watch 10-14 films. I think I have a hero.
