If you check out materials at the Randolph Township Public Library in Randolph, New Jersey, you’d better return your stuff on time and in good condition. If you don’t, they are not afraid to get the police involved. That’s what’s happening with the case of Taiwanese native Hsian Kao, who is alleged to have checked out $2500 worth of DVDs and music books and fled to Taiwan with the stolen property. Now, police have issued a warrant for Kao’s arrest over his non-returned library books.
The hard part is finding Kao. The last time anyone at the library saw him was August 4, but he got away before he could be confronted. According to his ex-wife, he’s returned to Taiwan and won’t be back in the United States until August 2011. Until then, police will be waiting to charge Kao with theft by unlawful taking. According to his ex-wife, Kao checked out the materials and deliberately planned to return to Taiwan with them, hence the criminal charges. Until he returns, library officials are just going to wait and hope he eventually gives the books back, unlike fellow library thief George Washington.
