I have a problem with a lot of reality shows. Either it’s a show I get in from the very beginning, like last year’s America’s Got Talent, or it’s a show I just never get into and can never watch, like American Idol. This year, I skipped most of America’s Got Talent, but that’s mostly because I didn’t get to watch it from the early stages, and once something starts up I can never jump in right in the middle. This year’s America’s Got Talent winner was Mississippi singer Michael Grimm, who bested pop artist Prince Poppycock, opera-singing fifth-grader Jackie Evancho, and performance art group Fighting Gravity to claim the $1 million dollar prize and the Las Vegas contract.
“I was so prepared to bow out — the biggest nightmare was standing next to her on stage — I knew she was going to win,” Grimm told USA TODAY afterwards. “I just never thought of winning this.” As for the other finalists, they proved to make this year’s finale one of the most interesting yet, as all the highlighted acts are potential Vegas-style extravaganzas or best-selling musical artists.
