Bank robbers, car thieves, muggers, pimps, and thugs. What do they have in common with Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Joe DiMaggio, Mariano Rivera, and Joe Torre? Well, they’ve all been spotted wearing the logo of the World Series champion New York Yankees. They’re the most popular team in baseball in general, and the most popular baseball team with criminals, as Yankee caps, shirts, and paraphernalia dominate the police blotters, both in New York City and around the world.
Part of that is due to the insane popularity of the Yankees. Merchandise bearing the logo and pinstripes of the Bronx Bombers accounts for 25% of all merchandise sold by Major League Baseball, far and away surpassing second-place Boston’s 8 percent and the New York Mets’ 5 percent. The Yankees are popular, to be sure, but they’re also very cool thanks to the presence of Yankees gear on rappers like Jay-Z, a native of New York City who has been repping Yankees hats for the better part of 10 years now.
“He wears it and makes it look cool,” explained criminologist Frankie Y. Bailey of the University of Albany. “It’s almost like the Yankees have acquired a kind of street rep, a coolness.” A coolness, hatred from other teams’ fans, AND a popularity with those looking to rob banks and loot gym lockers.
