The rock band Queen was one of the biggest (and in my opinion, best) of the giant 70’s rock bands. They filled stadiums, wrote some classic rock anthems, and were generally representative of all things bigger than life as lead by mustachioed, flamboyantly hypersexual front man Freddie Mercury. His story of how an Indian immigrant born in Zanzibar changed from Farrokh Bulsara into the biggest rock and roll star of his generation is one that should’ve been made into a rock biopic long before now, but there’s always time to right wrongs. A Freddie Mercury biopic is in the works, and it’s going to star English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, based off a script by Frost/Nixon and The Last King Of Scotland scribe Peter Morgan.
Cohen, the creator of Borat and Bruno, has actually been involved in this project from the earliest stages, according to Queen guitarist Brian May. “We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he’s been talking with us for a long time,” May said in an interview with BBC World News’ HardTalk. “He’s been in on this project since we started talking about it seriously with Peter Morgan a couple of years ago. We’ll try and keep ourselves out of it as much as we can,” he added.
Queen might be best known for the song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as used in BSG mash-up videos and the Muppet viral video resurgence. If Cohen can play it straight (pardon the pun), this could be a really good flick.
