Hurricanes are devastating, and when it’s a hurricane the size of Hurricane Karl, there’s going to be some trouble in its wake. Unfortunately for the residents of the state of Veracruz in Mexico, hurricane damage is the least of their worries. Thanks to the flooding brought by Hurricane Karl, somewhere between 280 and 400 endangered Morelet crocodiles escaped from an animal sanctuary in La Antigua. That’s a whole lot of crocodiles on the loose!
The Morelet’s (or Morelet) crocodile is an endangered species of crocodile that lives in Central America and Southern Mexico’s freshwater lakes and rivers, as well as the brackish coastal waters. Residents are asked not to kill any crocodiles they might spot, but to call the wildlife experts the government is flying in to handle the escapee problem, so as to avoid killing any of the rare crocs while they’re enjoying a bit of freedom. The crocodiles can grow up to 10 feet long.
