Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998. They hired their first employee on September 21, 1998. However, when you ask Google what their birth date is, they’ll tell you that it’s September 27, at least for this year. In past years, Google has celebrated its birthday on September 7, but this year Google’s 12th birthday is falling on September 27, 2010, and the company is celebrating in grand style with a brand new doodle!
The doodle, as you can see above, is a birthday cake. However, the usual Google artist or programmers didn’t put this cake together; this cake was drawn up by pop artist Wayne Thiebaud, who is famous for his paintings of, you guessed it, birthday cakes. It’s amazing when you consider that, in 12 years, Google has gone from a server in a garage to a multi-billion-dollar company, a leader in both search engine traffic and ad sales, with the cachet to challenge other companies on their home turf.
Amazing, isn’t it?
