One thing that can never be said about Google is that they’re afraid of anyone. Google is going after Facebook’s dominance in real-time information. Google is challenging Windows in the OS arena. And now, rumor has it, Google is going to challenge Apple in the music business by launching a download store, digital footlocker, and mobile music streaming system to challenge the dominance of iTunes. Google’s brave, that’s for sure! No matter who they have to buy, they’ll move into any business they want no matter the cost.
As we all know, Apple’s iTunes is the dominant music sales system in the world right now, with some 70% of the market. Any monopoly will generally not stand, and when you’re dealing with the music industry, the only monopoly those guys like is themselves. Hence, music execs are fully supporting Google’s plan to marry their popular Android platform to this new music system in the same way Apple’s marrying Ping to iTunes.
“Finally here’s an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform,” said a label executive. “What you’ll have is a very powerful player in the market that’s good for the music business.”
