There are two hosts who have most influenced me in my love of and attitude towards movies, be they good, bad, or so-bad-they’re-good. One of them is Joe Bob Briggs (AKA John Bloom), an award-winning journalist and columnist turned B movie review maestro and horror host. The other is Cassandra Peterson, AKA Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (warning, sound). Elvira, the creation of actress Cassandra Peterson, is returning to television with a nationally-syndicated late-night horror movie show dedicated to all things macabre.
The new show, called Elvira’s Movie Macabre, fills a big gap in my TV-watching experience. Joe Bob’s been off TV for a long time, and USA Up All Night has gone away. All that’s left is Mr. Lobo and, now, Elvira. The woman who started it all is back again, and better than ever. The show is something of Peterson’s baby, and is a bit of a gamble considering her reputation amongst horror fans.
“Although I’ve kept a low profile the last couple of years, Halloween is my busy season,” said Peterson. “However, I backed off the appearances this year because of the show. I am writing, producing and acting and, considering all the dry ice on set, I have to say no human has ever worked in more of a fog than me. When I was a teenager, I read ‘The Road Less Traveled’ and decided that if I was confronted with a choice, I’d take the more difficult option. It’s actually easier than when I made my last movie. I wrote, produced, and acted in that and ended up getting divorced from my husband. Now, I’m single, so at least that won’t happen.”
