Among other things, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi was a talented violin player. He was also homosexual, and that’s what eventually brought about his suicide, authorities say. He didn’t kill himself because he was gay, he killed himself because his roommate made and broadcast a secret webcam video of him making out/having sex with another man on the Internet. Dharun Ravi, the roommate in question, and Molly Wei, Ravi’s friend, were arrested on charges of invasion of privacy after Clementi jumped from the George Washington Bridge over the illegal taping.
Ravi actually provided some of the ammunition on the charges against him. On September 19, he tweeted “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.” He also apparently used the same webcam setup to view his roommate having sex on September 21. (Watching your gay roommate have gay relations multiple times via secret voyeur webcam doesn’t cause me to question your orientation at all.)
How bad off must you be to end it all via suicide jump? Jeez, that poor kid has to have been humiliated by this whole experience. What an awful story.
