Okay, so that’s a little bit of false advertising. The yams themselves weren’t actually on fire, it was just a truck carrying yams that caught on fire. A tractor-trailer truck hauling 50,000 pounds of sweet potatoes caught fire on Interstate 5 in Glendale, California, heading south towards Los Angeles. The flaming rig blocked two of the four lanes, and traffic was delayed for a staggering 7 hours and 30 minutes while A) the fire was extinguished and B) another truck was brought in to take over the much-needed yam delivery.
Fortunately, I don’t believe the sweet potatoes were ever in any real jeopardy, aside from hungry fire fighters. Still, imagine if those sweet potatoes did catch fire. Wouldn’t that smell incredible? Sweet potatoes are my favorite holiday side dish, and having recently discovered sweet potato fries, I’m even more impressed with just how versatile and flavorful these interesting-looking root vegetables are.
