If you’re looking for a prostitute on your next trip to Spain, you won’t have to look hard. Just be on the prowl for a scantily-clad woman wearing a bright orange reflective vest. Outside the Catalonian town of Els Alamus, Spain, along the LL-11 highway, you’ll find prostitutes wearing reflective orange like traffic workers normally would. That’s not to identify them as hookers; prostitution is legal in Spain. Spanish prostitutes are wearing reflective orange vests to identify them as road hazards.
“In the past couple of months the prostitutes have been fined for two reasons: for not wearing the reflective jacket and for creating danger on the public highway,” said police spokesman Mossos d’Esquadra.
Recent legislation had forced prostitutes from Els Alamus to leave the city center and take to the highways. Under Spanish law, pedestrians on the side of major highways and on hard shoulders have to wear reflective garments or face fines of 40 euros. Hence, the prostitute-warning vests, rather than prostitute crossing signs.
