For years, men were lucky. We could be as doughy as we wanted, and fashions would cover for us. We weren’t stuffed into low-cut, tight-fitting, and otherwise unflattering things like drainpipe jeans or bustiers. Now, things are a little different. Fashions are evening out, jeans for men are skinnier than ever, and those of us who are carrying a few extra pounds in the midsection are looking for coverage. That’s why Spanx is launching a line of shapewear for men, AKA the modern girdle.
The manssieres come in a variety of options, for both upper body shaping (the £55 Cotton Compression Undershirt and the £69 Zoned Performance Undershirt) and lower body control (Cotton Comfort briefs for £37 and boxer briefs for £47). I have to admit, I’m intrigued by this. I’m never going to be thin, and my genetic background prevents me from developing abs, so this might be the solution to my belly bulge. However, at those prices? I’ll just suck it in.
“We applied our 10 years of knowledge and expertise in compression fabrics and transforming the body to this first-of-its-kind collection for men,” said Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx. “The men in my life, and in Hollywood, have been asking me to make Spanx for men for years, so I was inspired to create comfortable and powerful undershirts that provide instant gratification without gimmicks. It’s your favourite T-shirt without your least favourite part … love handles.”
