Back in the 90’s, one of the few folks willing to challenge Microsoft’s dominance was Marc Andreessen, the creator of rival browser Netscape. Netscape is long gone, a victim of the first round of the Browser Wars, but that was 20 years ago and the world’s a different place now. Andreessen is back with a brand new invention: RockMelt. What’s so interesting about RockMelt? RockMelt is the first social web browser, integrating a web browser and a user’s various social media accounts into a single unit.
“The market is ripe for new ideas and better products,” said Andreessen. “What’s exciting is how dynamic the market has become. Nearly 500 million people have changed browsers in the last three years. Back when I was working on the browser, there weren’t that many people on the Internet.”
RockMelt ties a user’s social network accounts, like Facebook and Twitter, into their RockMelt account. You log into RockMelt, and all your necessary information is right there, waiting for you. You get updates from your favorite websites, your Facebook news feed, your Twitter feed, and more. Since you store that login information on RockMelt’s servers, you can take it all with you wherever you go. Rockmelt is expected to launch today, so be there or be square.
