For those in the know, Girl Talk isn’t simply a great musical mash-up artist, but an artist in his own right.  Girl Talk, the alias of Gregg Gillis, takes tunes we all know and love, from Missy Elliot to Black Sabbath to the Doobie Brothers and Li’l Wayne and mashes them up, taking samples lasting seconds or minutes and interweaving them together to form a spectacular sonic soundscape that has to be heard to believe.  Girl Talk has released his first new album since 2008’s Feed The Animals, titled All Day, on Illegal Art Records.  The album is free to download, but good luck getting it to actually work.  The Girl Talk frenzy is so high it’s knocked Girl Talk’s website offline multiple times over the last 24 hours.

“It was already staring to bubble when I went to sleep. … It went up at around 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time.  I actually posted a link on my personal Facebook first, and people on there were like, ‘Whoa, this is really it?’  I think the few kids who had been up all night or the people who don’t have day jobs who happen to be up at 5 in the morning were all kind of stunned by it a little bit.  And then I announced it on the Twitter … and it started blowing up a little bit,” laughed the DJ.  “You know, the Wikipedia page started, and people started listing samples and again, since I woke up, it’s been insane … just endless messages and so-and-so person wants to talk to you today.  … And then, people haven’t been able to download it, because the site has been down — which I’m sorry for — so, yeah, it’s been a crazy-ass day.”

I’m listening to the album right now, and believe me, it’s worth the effort.  The official download link will not work, I can guarantee you that, but try the mirrors on All Day’s Illegal Art page.  I just hope that, with all the frenzy around his work, that Girl Talk can continue to operate outside the purview of copyright Nazis.
