The Japanese are always pushing boundaries, especially when it comes to technology. While they’re not the leader on weird vending machine products, panties aside, they’re the leaders on robotic technology in general. A new vending machine from JR East Water Business Company scans the face of the customer and recommends drinks based on age and gender.
“If the customer is a man, the machine is likely to recommend a canned coffee drink, since men tend to prefer these. If the customer is in their 50s, though, that recommendation is likely to be green tea,” said a company spokeswoman. The machine will recommend drinks based on age- and gender-specific market research. “We thought it would make it a lot more fun for the customers to have this kind of interaction with our machines, that it would improve the whole buying experience.”
It was bad enough when vending machines started to dispense weird things like wine, caviar, gold, fresh milk, and canned sandwiches, but now the machine will make the choices for me! The first machine has already been installed in Tokyo Station; five more machines are set to join it shortly.
