At various times in my life, I drank a whole lot of coffee. We’re talking a pot a day, easy, plus caffeine from sodas and other sources. It was a bit extreme, I’ll admit, but nothing compared to the extreme new offering from the Crown Heights, Brooklyn coffee shop known as The Pulp & The Bean. There, owner Tony Fisher has turned a coffee cup into what he’s described as “one giant cup of jet fuel.” This drink, called The Dieci, is 10 shots of espresso in a cup.
“It’s never been done before. It just dawned on me that people really love espresso, so why not just give them a cup full of espresso?” Fisher admits that his 20-ounce cup of pure coffee extract isn’t for everyone, even him. “I drank a third of it. I’m still spinning,” he confessed. “We’re aiming for the on-the-go crowd – say a student who has an exam and really needs to wake up and get their act together.”
If that doesn’t get your act together, it might kill you (or make you kill someone else). Still, the drink is proving to be popular among the curious; Fisher has sold 16 of the drinks at $8 a pop.
