If there’s one thing you can say about Wayne and Laurie Hallquist, it’s that they have a sense of humor. The appropriate motto for Laurie’s real estate business is, “Head and shoulders above the rest — in stature and service. That’s our motto.” Laurie is 6 feet, 5.95 inches tall; her husband Wayne is 6 feet 10.4 inches tall. The combined height of Laurie and Wayne Hallquist is 13 feet 4.4 inches, making them the world’s tallest living married couple.
The couple met at their shared church in Stockton, California, and the sparks few almost immediately; however, the world record was gained by accident. “When we got married in 2003,” said Wayne, “as sort of a joke, we looked up who the tallest couple ever was and learned that in the 1870s, there had been a married couple where the husband was 7-foot-5 and the wife was 7foot-3. So we gave up on that. But then some family members discovered that we could submit our names for the record of tallest living couple — so we did. We discovered the couple with the title had a combined height of 13 feet, 3.3 inches. Laurie and I are 13 feet, 4.4 inches, so we alerted Guinness, and that got the process under way.”
The couple appeared on Lopez Tonight on Wednesday, and are looking for more television work in the future. Perhaps a reality TV show? Maybe a remake of The Odd Couple with the World’s Shortest Man?
“There are so many shows about little people,” said 57-year-old Wayne. “I think we’d make great friends or neighbors on one of those shows.” Added Laurie, “We’re interested in anything like that. Why not? How much fun would that be?”
