As a drug researcher who works with animals, UCLA professor David Jentsch is used to being harassed by animal welfare folks. After all, he lives in California, which is animal welfare nut central, so I’m sure he’s been experiencing this for a long time now. However, ALF and affiliated protest groups are really turning up the heat, having recently sent AIDS-laced razorblades in the mail to David Jentsch’s house.
“About a week ago I was going through my mail in my kitchen and I opened a letter and razor blades spilled out on the floor. It was the first sign something was nefarious,” said Jentsch. “The letter inside contained quite specific and heinous acts of violence to kill me.” ALF affiliates also stage protests on his lawn every month and have even set fire to his car in a targeted arson attempt. Added the professor: “I’m not afraid. I’m angry. It’s so ridiculous in our society that people do this just because they don’t like what you do.”
To protest is one thing, to specifically try to kill a guy is another. I don’t care if he’s vivisecting live animals on TV, to try to give him HIV/AIDS via dirty razor blades is really sick and low. Consider all the great things animal research has contributed to humanity, and may yet contribute. Human lives, and improving human life through legitimate medical research like Dr. Jentsch’s drug addiction work, should be more important than a whole garage full of monkeys.
