During last night’s Maui Invitational game between my beloved Kentucky Wildcats and the Washington Huskies, there was a lot of rocking and rolling. I’m not talking about the hyper fans in Lahaina Civic Center, though they did get raucous at times. I’m talking about actual rocking and rolling, in the form of an earthquake. During last night’s Kentucky/Washington college basketball game, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the Big Island of Hawaii.
The line of the night goes to UK’s coach, John Calipari. The always-interesting UK coach said, “There was an earthquake? What was it on the Richter Scale?” When told the magnitude, Calipari expressed disappointment. “Aw, that’s nothing. I thought you were going to tell me it was a 7 and the building would have shook a little bit.”
Of course, Hawaiians are no strangers to natural disasters and seismic activity. Still, during a big-time college basketball game, the crowd is so loud that the building would be shaking anyway, even without the Earth’s help. Kentucky ended up beating Washington 74-67.
