In Japan, there are a lot of fads. One of the biggest and most popular fads is related to bananas. First, bananas were touted as a diet aid. Now, only the best bananas get a classical education via classical music. The so-called Mozart bananas from Toyoka Chuo Seika are ripened to the strains of sonatas and concertos from Mozart. Musical therapy is one thing, but musical food therapy is something else entirely!
Supporters say that the Mozart bananas are sweeter. When shipments of bananas come into Toyoka Chuo Seika’s warehouses, the Mozart indoctrination begins immediately, according to company spokesperson Isamu Okuda. For a week, bananas are ripened to the sound of classical music, then the Mozart bananas are shipped off to market where customers snap them up in great numbers.
Of course, bananas aren’t the only Japanese products to get entertained during production. Soy sauce and udon noodles also get classical music serenades, but the granddaddy of using classical music to improve food is the Ohara Shuzo sake company, who started piping classical music into their brewery 20 years ago when the sake company’s president stumbled across a book about the process of using music to improve food. They’ve been doing it ever since, and now they find themselves a trend-setter in food preparation techniques.
