When New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped Miami Dolphins player Nolan Carroll, I imagine he never thought his sideline wall would get him in so much trouble. After all, he wasn’t on the playing field or standing on the out of bounds line; Alosi and crew were and are able to stand on the sidelines like they did. In fact, they stood in their wall-like formation all season until that one incident. Now that they have been outed for their behavior, the NFL fine machine has come down hard. The New York Jets were fined $100,000 over Sal Alosi’s trip squad.
According to the NFL, the Jets and Alosi “placed players in a prohibited area on the sideline to impede an opposing team’s special teams players and gain a competitive advantage,” which the league determined was “a competitive violation as well as a dangerous tactic.” Given the way the NFL has gotten fine-happy, the Jets are lucky they’re only out six figures.
As for Alosi, not only has he been fined $25,000, he’s also been suspended by the Jets for the rest of the season. Compared to the smaller comparative punishment Brett Favre received, Alosi is getting brutalized. I guess that’s the difference between potentially hurting someone and failing to keep your pants on.
