It’s taken the better part of a year, and probably longer, but the rumors have finally been proven true. Verizon Wireless, the nation’s largest cellular phone service, will be adding the world’s most popular smartphone. That’s right, boys and girls, you can officially drop your terrible AT&T service because the iPhone is coming to Verizon Wireless with a launch event scheduled for January 11. The iPhone is the third most popular smartphone OS in the United States, behind RIM’s Blackberry and various Android phones. It’s this slip into third that is believed to have pushed Apple into busting AT&T’s iPhone monopoly.
There’s only one problem with the Verizon iPhone. The specs leaked indicate that Verizon’s version of the iPhone will be a CDMA iPhone, not a 3G or 4G machine. Despite this, Verizon is estimated to sell 13 million iPhones in its first year of sales. Still, the older generation of technology isn’t expected to be a detriment to anyone, despite what AT&T’s talking heads are claiming.
“The iPhone is built for speed, but that’s not what you get with a CDMA iPhone,” said AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel. “I’m not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane.”
