China is an emerging superpower, there’s no doubt about that. However, when it comes to the supposed achievements of the Chinese military and their new air superiority, I’m a bit of a doubter, and I’ve got good reason to be this way. During a recent report on live-fire exercises conducted by the People’s Liberation Army’s air force, China Central Television (CCTV) spliced footage from the movie Top Gun into the news report. It’s not as if they made it obvious, of course; CCTV producers spliced a missile shot and explosion from Top Gun, and not a scene of beach volleyball.
Apparently, this is something that happens all the time in China and among Chinese news organizations. When Taiwan’s NMA News needs footage, they turn to their in-house animator. When CCTV needs footage, they turn to Jerry Bruckheimer. You know, it’s a shame China didn’t wait until Top Gun 2 comes out, because then they could have more a more advanced fake military, rather than a fake military stuck in the 80’s.
