If you’re looking for an excuse not to buy your sweetums something nice on Valentine’s Day, then you might have to change your religion. When it comes to the celebration of love and flowers and all that mess, the religion most dedicated to avoiding Valentine’s Day is Islam. See, for example, the Malaysian Muslims. Rather than celebrate Valentine’s Day, Malaysian Muslims are turning February 14 into “Mind the Valentine’s Day Trap” day, in which Muslims are reminded not to celebrate Valentine’s Day for fear of sin and death.
“In reality, as well as historically, the celebration of Valentine’s Day is synonymous with vice activities,” said Malaysia’s head Muslim authority, Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz, head of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department or JAKIM. “Islam would reject anything, even from the Eastern culture, if it contravenes the Islamic teachings.”
Interestingly enough, the Catholic Church hasn’t celebrated St. Valentine’s Day as a religious holiday since 1969, when the saint was deleted from the calendar of saints. Still, the formerly-Catholic association of the holiday (and its tradition of vice and lustfulness) is enough to cause JAKIM in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, to unofficially ban the holiday.
