Cue the ominous feelings of dread. If you had a flight on a United Airlines Boeing 757 today, you’re going to be on a different plane. United has grounded its entire fleet of Boeing 757s, 96 planes in all, for unscheduled maintenance. Flights have been cancelled or delayed starting last night and into today, and the fleet is expected to be mothballed for the next 12-24 hours, depending on how long the checks last.
Here’s how United phrased their maintenance.
“Specifically … United is performing follow-up maintenance checks starting today to the air data computers on its 96 Boeing 757s,” said United spokesperson Rahsaan Johnson. “All of the air data computers are fully functional. The checks are necessary as part of a modification process to the system.”
Fortunately, no one has spilled any coffee and damaged these planes. The computer checks take anywhere from 60-90 minutes, if there are no problems with the system changes. The maintenance is designed to ensure that flight crews can stop an overspeed or stall warning that sounds by mistake.
