A farmer in Dartmoor, in the Devon section of England, has had a problem with theft over the past few years. A shepherd by trade, John Heard’s livelihood is related to his sheep, so stolen sheep are doubly expensive and eat into his profits. So, Heard had a novel solution to stop the theft of his sheep. John Heard dyed his fleet of blackface ewes bright orange. As it turns out, orange isn’t just for the school bus!
“It produces strange-looking sheep but it has done the trick and I haven’t lost one this year,” said Heard, who has had 200 sheep stolen over the past few years. Blackface ewes are valued at 140 pounds, or about $228 dollars. “It works because they are so easy to distinguish making it easier for me and my neighbors to keep a wary eye out for them.”
If you’re worried about the health of the sheep, don’t be. The orange dye used on the sheep is non-toxic and not permanent. More importantly, none of Heard’s orange sheep have been stolen by rustlers or prison escapees looking for a way to hide.
