Gas prices are up. The deficit is up. Unemployment is up. Bankruptcies are up. About the only thing that’s down, aside from the value of homes, is the American mood. Americans are at the unhappiest they’ve been in two years, according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, and that record grump doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon. In fact, things are getting worse all the time, at least in the mind of Americans.
The percentage of people who think the economy is getting worse has jumped 13 points in a single month. The amount of people who disapprove of the job Congress is doing is up to 75 percent. President Obama’s disapproval rating on the economy is up to about 57 percent, which is about the same as his disapproval rating on the deficit. Even Obama’s handling of the war in Libya is losing support, with 45 percent disapproving of the way Obama has handled that foreign policy issue.
Will people ever be happy? No, probably not. Still, these numbers are bad as Obama builds up to run for President (again). Not that Republican approval is much better, mind you, but when people are unhappy, they tend to flee to the opposition regardless.
