There’s nothing like a weekend at the beach. There’s something about the combination of sun, sand, and salt air that can turn an otherwise normal body of water into heaven on earth, unless of course the beach you’re frequenting is under assault from hordes of angry mauve stinger jellyfish, in which case your heaven can quickly turn into a vinegar-soaked hell. Brevard County, Florida, home of Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, and Cape Canaveral (among many other beach communities), was the epicenter of a massive jellyfish swarm that left hundreds of people seeking medical treatment. Brevard County Ocean Rescue says that Memorial Day weekend was the perfect storm of attacking jellyfish and massive amounts of people seeking ocean fun.
“Saturday, we got about 200 reports. Sunday, we got another 250,” said Brevard County Ocean Rescue Assistant Chief Eisen Witcher. “This time of year, this can happen when the conditions are perfect for jellyfish to wash up. You have an onshore breeze combined with an east swell.” Chief Witcher added, “These jellyfish are not a major threat, but they are annoying.”
Kind of like the tourists the jellyfish have been attacking!
