People will use any excuse to start rioting and go crazy. No more nuts at the bar? Time to riot. Justin Bieber doesn’t show up to the mall? Time to riot. Vancouver loses the Stanley Cup Finals? Time to riot. Canada, long believed by people who don’t know better to be a genteil heaven on earth, has egg on its face today. Last night, after the Vancouver Canucks lost Game Seven of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals to the Boston Bruins 4-0, Vancouver exploded in riots, looting, burning, and general destruction.
Vancouver’s mayor, Gregor Robertson, called the rioting and destruction “absolutely disgraceful and shameful.” The mayor added, “We will deal with these trouble makers.”
You expect this kind of thing in certain places: Morgantown, West Virginia, is famous for burning couches. Los Angeles always looks for any excuse for a riot. Still, Vancouver? Canada in general? Nobody expects Canada to explode, yet here we are, the day after losing a sporting event, and Vancouver’s in flames.
