Takashi Murakami's Google Doodle
There are some days that just seem to last forever, and then there’s the summer solstice. While it doesn’t last forever, the summer solstice is the longest day of the year, as this is the closest the earth will be to the sun all year. The summer solstice is today, June 21, and Google has decided to honor the summer solstice with a special Google Doodle from Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
Today is the longest day for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere; in my area, the sun will rise at 6:19 AM and won’t set until 9:09 PM (well, assuming we even see the sun through all the rain). Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, today is the winter solstice, or the shortest day of the year. Either way, all the pagans of the world will be undertaking their various rituals and ceremonies to honor the sun and ensure it continues its journey across the sky (or whatever it is they do and why they do it, I won’t even begin to try and understand it).
Just think, after today, we’ve still got two or three months of stifling heat left!
