At the time, it was a can’t miss property, yet somehow, it missed. When Star Wars Galaxies launched eight years ago, it was an instant hit. Fans were energized by the prospect of further Star Wars adventures, and they were ready to get in on the action. As it turns out, however, the game never quite resonated with the public the way it should have. Star Wars Galaxies will be closing down on December 15, say Sony officials.
Part of it is declining revenue, and part of it is to clear the way for Bioware’s new Star Wars MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. While the official party line denies that Sony’s PlayStation Network hacks have anything to do with it, you’d be crazy not to add that into the list of problems between LucasArts and Sony. The fact that the game itself has undergone multiple overhauls of both its graphical appearance and its gameplay mechanics didn’t help it keep fans (or reassure Lucas and company that Sony knows what it is doing).
Sony and LucasArts have planned some sort of massive “galaxy-ending in-game event” for its final days; those who have remaining playing time paid for will be given passes to the PlayStation Network’s other games.
