Hunter Matthews was saved from a house fire by Facebook.
Like most kids her age, Hunter Matthews is completely connected. From her mobile phone to her Facebook account, she’s always hooked into technology whenever and wherever she might be. Far from being a detriment to the enjoyment of her life, that connectivity to Facebook actually saved the 17-year-old’s life. Hunter Matthews was saved from an apartment fire by a Facebook update.
When a friend commented on Hunter’s Facebook status update, it pinged Hunter’s mobile phone. When Hunter woke up, everything around her was on fire. A portable heater she was using to warm up her room in her grandmother’s apartment in Kearneys Spring, Australia, caused some of her clothing to catch on fire.
“It was only by chance that a friend commented on my status and Facebook sent an alert through to my phone, which woke me up,” said a very lucky Ms. Matthews. “I am so lucky that I got that message, otherwise I would have been killed. It was the scariest experience of my life; I certainly do not want to ever go through that again. I can still shut my eyes and remember when I woke up, taking that big breath of air only to realize it was smoke. It was terrible.” Added the teen, “I can safely say I love Facebook … it saved my life.”
