Originally scheduled to open in December 2009 and pushed back a year to December 2010, the Harmon Tower is a brand-new 26-floor hotel right in the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada’s incredible new CityCenter development. However, though the hotel tower has never opened, its owners are ready to tear it down. MGM Resorts International wants to tear down a never-opened, brand-new hotel, because it claims the hotel is not earthquake safe and was built below code. The company that built the hotel, Tutor Perini Corporation, says that MGM Resorts simply wants to reduce the amount of hotel space on the Las Vegas Strip and is making something up to destroy a perfectly good building.
When you look at the facts, it looks good for MGM’s case. The hotel itself was supposed to be twice as tall, but problems with reinforcing steel caused difficulty with the tower’s construction and forced MGM to shorten it and delay its opening by a year. Now, MGM says the building is an earthquake risk (which reminds me, I didn’t know Vegas got a lot of earthquakes). However, Tutor Preini’s argument also seems solid thanks to the real estate crash in Vegas leading to a surplus of death-ray blasting hotel rooms and condos.
The way things look, Harmon Towers looks to be the next target for Las Vegas implosion magnates LVI Services, Incorporated and Controlled Demolition, Incorporated. LVI is the company responsible for imploding Las Vegas landmarks, including the Sands Hotel, the Desert Inn, the Stardust and the Aladdin. Will the Harmon Towers be next?
