Gorillas And Ducklings Are Friends

Posted 10/07/2011 8:00 am by

When gorilla meets duckling.

Sometimes, it seems like gorillas are from another planet.  They’re huge and fearsome and potentially dangerous, but they’re also capable of incredible sweetness and gentle behavior.  For example, when a lost baby duckling ended up in the gorilla enclosure in the Bronx Zoo in New York, visitors waited with bated breath to see what might happen next.  Would the gorillas be hostile?  As it turns out, the gorillas were more curious than angry, which resulted in this adorable picture of a gorilla playing with a duckling.

Here’s the story from Tom Warren, the 51-year-old photographer who happened to capture the unlikely meeting between the gorilla and the duck.

“I went to the zoo and quickly became aware of a commotion in the gorilla exhibit, as many of the school children were yelling ‘ducky, ducky!’  We all watched with amazement as the little duckling wandered around the exhibit, while the gorillas either backed away from it or inspected it with curiosity.  Then I spotted the duckling on the log next to a seemingly, amused gorilla.  The duckling did not seem the least bit intimidated and for good reason, as Africa’s gentle giants eat mostly fruits and plants.  How fortunate I was to witness a wonderful moment between two unlikely friends,” said Warren, who witnessed the encounter.  “I held my breath and was able to fire off a few frames, knowing that the moment that I was witnessing was a very special one.  I was relieved when I got home and that the scene was in focus despite the fact that the photograph was taken through a thick piece of plexiglass.”

Apple’s September 9 Event: iWatch and iPhone 6?

Posted 8/29/2014 11:00 am by

The invitation simply says, “Wish we could say more,” as if that’s enough of an apology.  It’s not, but when it comes to Apple and new products, the name of the game is cryptic.  Also probably white and shiny.  But mostly cryptic.  Apple sent out a teaser for an event on September 9 at the […]

It’s always strange to see a mugshot with someone really attractive staring back at you from the pages of Crime Time or the local police department website. Most people, during their mugshots, look irritable or downright crazy, the exact opposite of the sort of thing people like to look at.  Not so for Stockton, California […]

Atlanta Braves Celebrate Home Opener By Burning The American Flag

Posted 4/09/2014 3:03 pm by

Historically, the Atlanta Braves have been a model franchise.  Aside from a lack of post-season success, the Braves have been a winning ball club, a good ambassador to the South for baseball, and have generally been a pretty classy organization, at least as far as sports teams with Native American mascots can be.  However, one […]

There are a lot of dumb controversies surrounding Starbucks, from the decision to test alcohol sales to the store’s ubiquity in every place folks congregate around the world.  One Louisiana school teacher got a little more than she bargained for when she stopped by the Starbucks location at Baton Rouge’s Mall of Louisiana to get […]

Target Is Bad At Photoshop

Posted 3/12/2014 10:30 am by

When it comes to digitally editing photos, less is usually more.  Unless you’re trying to make deliberately weird pictures, the more you mess with a picture the worse it becomes.  That’s why Photoshop has become such a bane to the existence of teenagers ever.  Not only does it promote illogical standards of beauty, it also […]

There aren’t many men on campus at Wellesley College.  That’s probably because it’s an all-women school.  However, there’s one guy on campus these days, and he’s tromping around the grounds in nothing more than a pair of tighty whitey underwear with his eyes closed.  Wellesley College has a statue of a guy in his underwear […]
