For whatever reason, Sony cannot make a handheld game that people want to buy. Nintendo, even with its screw-ups regarding the Nintendo 3DS, owns the portable gaming handheld market, and Sony can’t seem to make a dent in the market. Fortunately, Sony is a multi-billion-dollar company with lots of cash to waste, so they’ll keep trying. The long-rumored next generation PSP, now called the PlayStation Vita, is coming. The PlayStation Vita will be released in North American on February 22, 2012.
“PlayStation Vita will redefine traditional boundaries of gaming and blur the lines between entertainment and reality,” said Sony Computer Entertainment America chief executive Jack Tretton at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, California. “Its launch will serve as a pivotal point in the history of portable gaming and create a new fan base of PlayStation gamers for generations to come.”
The Vita will have two different models with two different price points. A WiFi-enabled version will retail for $245; a 3G version will retail for $300. The devices will have front and rear-facing cameras, a 5-inch OLED touch-screen on the front with a second touch pad on the back, and Internet capabilities. Sony promises 26 titles for its Japanese launch in December, with 100 more titles in the pipeline. Sony has sold 71.4 million PSPs since launch.
