Reports coming out of Libya this morning alerted the world to the fact that Moammar Gadhafi has been killed. Al Jazeera Arabic broke the news this morning when a member of the National Transitional Council made the announcement. Reports are that the former dictator, no matter how you spell his name, was killed near his birthplace of Sirte. The announcement had US news bureaus scrambling to confirm the story. NATO did report it struck two pro-Gadhafi military vehicles in the Sirte area. As of now, the US government has yet to confirm or deny the reports of Gadhafi’s death.
It has been quite a year for revolution in the Middle East. First the uprisings in Egypt created a spirit of change that spread across the region, hopping from nation to nation.
One of the last to feel the wave of freedom was Libya. Dictator Moammar Gadhafi held firm to his chokehold on the nation for as long as he could until he was usurped. His 42-year reign came to an end when he abandoned his Tripoli stronghold and went on the run in late August.
