Whether it’s the stinkiest sneakers on the planet or a pair of shoes banned by the NBA, footwear can bring you recognition. Shoes can be a fashion statement or a functional tool, and now high-tech footwear can be a potential lifesaver. I’m not talking about Maxwell Smart’s shoe phone here.
GTX Corp. offers a pair of shoes that looks comfy enough but can also bring peace of mind to the families of Alzheimer’s patients. Elderly people suffering from Alzheimer’s are prone to getting disoriented and wandering away from their homes and familiar areas. GTX Corp.’s footwear includes, not only easy to manage velcro closures, but a GPS system.
Family or caretakers can set up a “geo fence” as a perimeter around areas the patient is allowed to move freely within. Once the patient crosses the “fence,” the shoe sends an e-mail alert to the caretaker or family member. Along with the notice that the loved one has wandered beyond their allowed zone, a Google map based on the GPS device in the shoe provides information as to the exact location of the patient.
Now that’s a smart use for technology, and I don’t think these shoes will ever be used as a weapon in a stripper fight.
