You’d think they were the perfect pair. Ben Gibbard, lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie, and Zooey Deschanel, the twee indie film darling turned honey-throated 60’s style pop star as the lead singer of She and Him. Their careers are going well; Death Cab dropped their seventh album this year and Zooey’s got a full slate of movies, a new sitcom on Fox called The New Girl, and a Christmas-themed She and Him album that just came out last week. Apparently, the strain of two booming careers was too much for their marriage. Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel are getting divorced after two years of marriage. They were married in September 2009.
“It was mutual and amicable,” a source told US Weekly. “There was no third party involved.”
You can look from the outside and understand why Kim Kardashian’s marriage didn’t make it, but when you look at this one from without, the career difficulty is the only thing you can think of that might kill it, assuming both sides are being honest about their fidelity. Marriage is hard work, and it’s tough to balance that with a pair of careers that mean you’re both traveling constantly.
Still, it frees Zooey up to pursue her real marriage destiny, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
