Long-time Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno has been fired by Penn State, effective immediately. The football program whose motto is “Success With Honor” has been very successful, but not terribly honorable over the past decade or so, and the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal has cost Joe Paterno his job. Tom Bradley, the team’s defensive coordinator, will be taking over as head coach. Also out at Penn State is university president Graham Spanier, who was also dismissed immediately by the trustees of Penn State; he will be replaced by Rodney Erickson on an interim basis.
“The university is much larger than its athletic teams,” said Penn State Board of Trustees vice chair John Surma at yesterday’s press conference. “The Penn State board of trustees tonight decided it is in the best interest of the university to have a change in leadership to deal with the difficult issues that we are facing. The past several days have been absolutely terrible for the entire Penn State community. But the outrage that we feel is nothing compared to the physical and psychological suffering that allegedly took place.”
Meanwhile, hordes of Penn State fans and students took to the streets of State College, protesting and marching and chanting in favor of the beloved Coach Paterno. After all, Paterno’s plan of retiring at the end of the season was ignored by the university in favor of an immediate change in leadership, and they were probably right to do so. In spite of his successes on the field, Paterno has proven himself to be an ineffective, milquetoast leader off the field, who no doubt covered up Jerry Sandusky’s actions while coach at Penn State. Paterno released a statement detailing his thoughts on his removal.
Joe Paterno is the all-time wins leader in college football history. Penn State is currently 8-1 and ranked #12 in the nation. Paterno’s public statements have shown regret over the incident, but sometimes feeling sorry isn’t enough.
