When it comes to the legendary temper of hall-of-fame coach Bob Knight, few men know his temper as well as Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski cut his teeth playing for Bob Knight at Army from 1966-69, and it was on Knight’s recommendation that Krzyzewski got the Duke head coaching job way back in 1980. The two had a falling-out in 1992, when Knight’s IU squad was bested by Coach K’s Blue Devils and Krzyzewski got testy at a post-game press conference, but the two men reunited in 2001 when Knight gave Krzyzewski’s own Hall of Fame induction speech. Now, the two are united yet again. Coach K passed Bobby Knight to become the all-time wins leader among men’s NCAA basketball coaches.
Last night, Duke toppled the Michigan State Spartans 74-69 at Madison Square Garden. It was Coach K’s 903rd win, breaking a tie with Knight for tops in men’s Division I basketball. It was yet another landmark for Duke’s coach, who adds that plaudit to his 4 national titles (last in 2010), 13 ACC titles, 11 Final Four appearances, and his 2008 Olympic gold medal.
As much as it pains me as a Kentucky fan to praise Duke after that 1992 NCAA tournament Final Four game in which Christian Laettner stepped on Aminu Timberlake deliberately, but didn’t get thrown out of the game because he plays for Duke and they can do no wrong, even I have to give props to Coach K. Sure, he looks like a rat-faced little scumbag with a massive combover, but he knows how to recruit and he knows how to win, even if he has no idea what to do with any player over 6’9 and is in league with Satan.
