It took five years for the experiment to take off, but once David Beckham got on the same page as his Major League Soccer teammates, everything broke the right way. Beckham has struggled with injuries and clashed with his teammates since he came to America, but all that strive has been washed away this season, and the Los Angeles Galaxy have been winners all season. The MLS Cup finals ended up being no different. Landon Donovan scored a goal in the 72nd minute to push the LA Galaxy past the Houston Dynamo 1-0 to win the MLS Cup. It was Beckham’s first (and possibly only) MLS Cup win; it was the Galaxy’s third overall cup title.
The only goal in the game was scored by MLS Cup MVP Landon Donovan, off of passes by Beckham and fellow European and international star Robbie Keane. It was Donovan’s 20th goal in the MLS playoffs for his career, and it caps a season in which the LA Galaxy did not lose at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. It also caps a playoff run in which the LA Galaxy did not lose a game. This season was the second-best regular season in MLS history, and the MLS Cup final was watched by a sell-out crowd of over 30,000 people.
“It’s been the most enjoyable time of my career in America over the last year, and this just tops it off,” said new father Beckham, who at 36 finds himself the target of interest from international clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain. “I’ve said before, I need to sit back and relax and enjoy this moment, and then I’ll figure out what I’m going to do next year. I might talk in the past tense sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I’m leaving. It’s been an amazing five years.”
