Ten months ago, the NHL lost one of its marquee players when superstar and Stanley Cup champion Sidney Crosby went down to a concussion. Crosby, the face of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and one of the best hockey players of his generation, suffered a massive concussion that left him off the ice for nearly an entire year as he struggled with post-concussion symptoms. The move kicked off a new wave of awareness in hockey regarding concussions and big hits, and caused the NHL to make moves to protect its players from the game they love. Now, it all seems to have paid off. Sidney Crosby will be making his return to hockey tonight.
Crosby will see the ice as his Penguins take on the New York Islanders tonight. The game will be televised on Versus, who jumped at the chance to broadcast Sid the Kid’s return to hockey. Crosby was cleared for hitting on October 13, and it’s clear that the Penguins–and the NHL–have been very careful about returning him to avoid his brain being further scrambled by on-ice contact.
Crosby, the 2007 MVP of the NHL, is only 24, but after a year away from hockey how much will he bring to the table? Hopefully he’s more like his old self and less like Justin Bieber, another hockey-loving Canadian boy. Right now, his Penguins are tied for the lead in the NHL’s Atlantic Division with 25 points, and they have a respectable 11-6-3 record.
