Over the last 20 years, Apple has become the largest consumer electronics company in the world. They’re in the running for the world’s most valuable company thanks to their massively popular tablet, the Apple iPad. Apple has sold millions of iPads over the tablet’s lifespan, and that’s been the key to their incredible financial success. According to research firm Canalys, Apple is poised to overtake HP as the world’s largest PC vendor, with one caveat. That’s assuming you consider the iPad a PC.
When it comes to traditional computers, like desktops and laptops, Apple only has 5 percent of the market share. However, when you add in the iPad, it changes things. Of course, the debate is whether or not the iPad is a computer.
Personally, I believe it’s not; I don’t consider the tablet computer form factor as a PC, since it doesn’t have a keyboard and isn’t up to the task of legitimate work, like writing blog posts (in my case) without some kind of add-on. The fact that the iPad runs off a mobile phone OS is another knock against it. After all, even netbooks run off of legitimate Windows or Linux, and they’re basically clamshell tablets.
