When the defections started, the most vulnerable league was the Big East. Long-time stalwarts Syracuse and Pittsburgh have fled for the ACC, West Virginia left for the Big 12, and TCU backed out of joining to also go to the Big 12. That’s a whole lot of teams you have to replace. Fortunately, the Big East have conspired to add five teams to their football family in 2013. Boise State and San Diego State are joining as football-only members; Houston, Central Florida, and SMU will become Big East members in all sports.
“I think what John Marinatto just did, he should get a substantial raise for what he just accomplished,” said Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino. “Getting Boise State. Getting Houston, SMU. I think that is as good of a job for a commissioner with his back against the wall as I’ve seen since I’ve been in athletics. The teams you lost aren’t as good in football as the teams you’re bringing in.”
That’s the big word there: football. They lost some good football teams (in West Virginia and TCU) and some mediocre football teams (Pittsburgh and Syracuse), but they’ve lost some of the best basketball programs in the country. They added some hoops teams, but none of them are as good as Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia, all of which are top-flight hoops teams.
Now that John Marinatto has saved the Big East’s BCS automatic bid in football, he’s got to save the conference’s prestige in basketball by going out and picking up a couple of basketball teams. For instance, the Memphis Tigers or/and the Temple Owls as basketball-only teams.
