Critter invasions are not completely uncommon. Sure if you live in Alaska or Canada you might end up with a bear trying to snack on your weiner dog. Or if you happen to be at a Wal-Mart in Utah, thousands of confused migrating birds might mistakenly crash land in the parking lot next to your SUV.
But no matter the location, can anyone ever imagine a baby fur seal sneaking into their home?
That’s what Annette Swoffer found in the kitchen of her house in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Hearing her cats causing a ruckus, Swoffer went to her kitchen to check on the family pets. What she found was a cute seal pup upsetting her cats. The seal then shuffled (I guess that’s how you would describe a seal moving on land) past the homeowner and her pets and moved from the kitchen to the living room where it found a comfy spot on the couch to rest up after its journey.
See, the seal pup had trekked quite a way to reach Swoffer’s home since she her property isn’t right against the shore. The pup, according to the New Zealand Herald, had to travel from the “waterfront, through the suburb’s residential area, across busy Welcome Bay Rd, up a slip road, along Ms Swoffer’s long driveway, under a gate, through the cat door and up some stairs.” Yes, you read that correctly. This seal pup figured out how to use a cat door. Not only is it cuter than a baby komodo dragon, it is apparently good at problem-solving.
Swoffer called over a neighbor to confirm that she wasn’t hallucinating and she did actually have a seal in her house. Her next call was to the SPCA to ask them to remove her unwanted guest. During the call, she had to convince the SPCA that she wasn’t drunk nor lying.
So now that I know it’s possible for random stray seals to show up in my home, I’m going to keep an eye out for unicorns and kraken on my couch. Keeping my fingers crossed.
