When it comes to brain functioning, what’s known as a senior moment actually starts well before retirement age. According to new research into brain functioning conducted at University College London, declines in memory and brain functioning start at age 45. That’s significantly earlier than previously thought, which researchers had before believed started in the mid-60s.
“We now need to look at who experiences cognitive decline more than the average and how we stop the decline. Some level of prevention is definitely possible,” said Professor Archana Singh-Manoux from the Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health in France, who supervised the research at UCL. “Rates of dementia are going to soar and health behaviors like smoking and physical activity are linked to levels of cognitive function. It’s important to identify the risk factors early. If the disease has started in an individual’s 50s but we only start looking at risk in their 60s, then how do you start separating cause and effect?”
For those concerned about their brain functioning, perhaps it’s time to alter your diet and lifestyle and start popping those Vitamin B supplements. You can’t yet stop the decline, but you can make it a lot better as you go, and any improvement is something to be pleased with.
