We’re right in the midst of college football’s bowl season – a time when heroes are made.
However, our heroes are still human beings who sometimes let us down.
Unlike his moment of glory at Notre Dame when he was carried off the football field on the shoulders of his teammates, Daniel Ruettiger, or Rudy as he is commonly known, is now in the spotlight for a more shameful reason.
Rudy was forced to pay $382,866 as a settlement for his part in a stock scam, known as pump-and-dump, that netted $11 million. His company was promoting its beverage Rudy Nutrition as something that it wasn’t. At least it wasn’t Pink Pepsi.
Like the car repairman whose scam was breaking people’s vehicles before offering to repair them, Ruettiger, the former Notre Dame football player who persevered despite his small size, used the fame and influence he received after the inspirational movie made about his time as a member of the Fighting Irish to dupe people.
I’m guessing those people who got scammed are more anxious to punish Rudy than treat him in a heroic manner. Greed is such an ugly thing.
