Whenever you head to the airport, the adventures don’t stop when you step on the plane. These days, you never know how your flight experience is going to be. It could be flawless, as my recent trip was, or it could be terrible. After all, you’ve got the chance of pilot error, and there are numerous planes being grounded for technical problems. However, neither of these were the reason why a British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after departing London’s Heathrow Airport; instead, the set-up was right out of Airplane! Shortly after takeoff, the pilots of the Airbus A321 going from London to Glasgow started feeling lightheaded and were forced to turn the plane around.
“I was on the London to Glasgow flight yesterday, departed Heathrow at 4 pm-ish got airborne, at approx 20 mins into flight a very abrupt and panicked message came over the PA from the pilot,” said an anonymous passenger, who went on to describe how the cabin crew had to get oxygen for the pilots. “Still being fed the tech fault line but the first on board were paramedics?? It later transpires that both pilots became lightheaded/dizzy/unwell at the same time, in my book that’s serious.”
Given the recent troubles other airlines have had with Airbus planes, maybe it’s some kind of design flaw, or inferior quality control. Perhaps the cabin was losing pressure, and thus the pilots started to get sick from lack of atmosphere? Maybe they both ate at the same restaurant before leaving? There’s no telling what kicked off these problems, but hopefully British authorities will get it sorted out before someone gets hurt.
